Catherine Munch - English
The origin:
Dr William H. Bates (1860-1931) was a New York ophthalmologist. He developed a method of natural vision education, based on his clinical observations and founded on 4 major principles:
movement
relaxation
memory and imagination
central fixation
Revolutionary for its time, his approach brought together the physiological and the psychological.
Aldous Huxley pays tribute to him in his book The art of seeing: “Thanks to extreme good fortune, I had the good fortune to discover by personal experience that (...) visual function can be re-educated to a normal state by appropriate methods of coordination of body and mind.”
Who is it for?
Thanks to its simplicity, the Bates method can be practised by anyone, even children.
It is recommended :
For refractive problems (myopia, presbyopia, astigmatism, etc.) : with regular practice, you can increasingly reduce your correction and do without your more often.
For binocular problems
For headaches, dry eyes, sensitivity to light, etc.
As a preventive measure for those who live in an environment that is hard on the eyes.
How the sessions work:
After an initial consultation, I will teach you the activities that are best suited to your needs and give you advice on how to look after your eyes on a daily basis. Gradually, you’ll build up a range of activities that will enable you to practise more and more autonomously. You should envisage around ten sessions to build up this initial toolbox tailored to your needs.
Ethics :
The Bates method is not a substitute for medical treatment. All personal information exchanged during the sessions remains strictly private.

About me
Interested in different holistic techniques, I’m convinced that we all have a power of self- healing that’s just waiting to be used. It was this conviction that led me to discover the Bates method as a student for a presbyopia problem. Blown away by the results on my vision, I quickly decided to become a teacher of the Bates method.
After working as a school teacher for more than 20 years, I now return to my first profession, back to the values I hold dear: teaching and passing on knowledge.
I began my training in 2022 at the Ecole de la Vue in Paris. Today, I’m a certified teacher of the Bates method and I continue to learn and train, notably with Meir Schneider in November 2023 at a seminar on low vision.
I’m also a member of the Art de voir association (Paris)
